Cottage Garden in Olinda...

The garden is bursting with flowers and greenery this year..

I think its all the rain we have had this spring..

Its lovely to wander around in the warmer weather..

and enjoy the results of the hard work we have put in..

I have a bit of colour in my showroom at the moment too..

And we do all love a touch of colour dont we?..

Our bedroom from shabby chic to .....

I'm a little tired of all the roses..

there I said it

and I've clamped my hand over my mouth 

because I never thought I would say that 

but sleeping on a bed surrounded by roses is not what it used to be..

I've already sold off the blanket box at the end of the bed..

and I've taken that picture off the wall..

Those hat boxes are heading to my youngest cherubs room to go on top of her wardrobe..

And I've been playing around with a few displays..

toned down ones that are more about texture and bling..

 

I like this look..

but I actually am going to sell the mirror..

its in my ebay store tonight..

and I found this gorgeous old piece of advertising that I wanted to display..

she's just the prettiest thing..

and I'm enjoying the textures of white and neutrals currently..

 

soooo did you spot it?

Yes, ok, the little girl is holding a rose..

I mean you can't give roses up completely can you?

and now..

Cottage Garden meet Mr Bob Cat...

This big old garden needs a lot of work..

you might remember early on I mentioned about a Garden party being held in our Garden that was highlighted in the Melbourne daily newspaper - The ARGUS in 1938

I'm sure the grounds were Garden party ready in those days but quite possibly had not been weeded or maintained very well since..

the trees are huge and awe inspiring however there is little in the way of understory and large shrubs that are typical to the area..

such as Rhododendrons, magnolias camelias etc etc.

There are a few speckled specimens here and there but no major plantings that you would expect in such an old garden..

we do have a very impressive collection of onion weed though..

it snakes its way through the equally weed like holly and ivy in a malicious march..

putting you at ease with its nodding white heads while secreting its ordouris onion smell

We are not friends.

Never will be.

This garden does however have wonderful "bones"

it has a little pond..

and rock walls scattered about..

with old silver birches and red spotted toad stools in the autumn..

so it is worth bringing back to its garden party hey day..

Time for the big guns..

Meet Mr Bob Cat..

The grounds have been made more defined..

and cut out the turning circle..

slabs of broken concrete removed

A ramp up the side to go to the higher part of the garden..

a parking area..

A new path down to the stables..

We are pretty happy with results..

and have a good starting point to tackle the rest of the garden..

I was getting a bit tired of my rose paintings..

there I said it..

I mean I do love them

but they have been on that wall for a very long time..

and I was a bit tired of seeing them every day..

you know what I mean..

I think its because I've been housebound with the flu..

and was itching to do something..

anything..

besides being idle..

so..

I thought I would have a bit of fun with some salvage items I had lying around..

I'd already put a screen in front of my antique mirror on the other side of the room..

I love the look of those old door screens..

 

So why not grab the one off the wall outside and bring it in?

 

an old leadlight door from a kitchen cabinet wouldnt go astray either..

I love its chippy painted frame..

and that old etched mirror..

well that had been hiding out in a bedroom for a few years not really seen..

time to be on display..

Got some strange eye brow raising when the family got home..

but that's what happens when you are house bound with the flu

you gotta do something dont you??

Treasures - Vintage and Divine

Down with the flu this week..

annoying because I'm not good at sitting still and getting better..

there's so much that needs doing!

At least it's slowed me down enough to do a blog post though..

Don't you just love old chandeliers...

particularly when they are from France..

you can tell the difference too

these ones are quite heavy

you can feel the quality..

they have wood in their frames..

and the crystals are slightly different too..

 

I'm selling these big ones..

 

but I'm keeping the sconces..

they are just too divine in all their French crystals..

I'm being good though..

because I'm selling these gorgeous old ones instead..

I mean you cant keep everything can you??

Landscaping an old cottage garden...

One thing I love about old houses is they have a story to tell..

I've been doing a bit of research on Greystanes and found out a few things about it..

Greystanes was one of the earlier blocks released for sale in the original section of Olinda..

We have a Plan of the area showing the first owner was Thomas Adams

who co-incidently also purchased one of the first blocks in the main street of Olinda..

This plan of early property holders dates from 1895 - 1918

I also found a newspaper article from 

THE ARGUS - MELBOURNE 22ND OCTOBER 1938

Olinda Garden

The lovely garden of Greystanes Olinda

was the setting, this week for a fete arranged by the Olinda auxiliary for the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind    A musical programme was given by blind musicians and Mr W C Wilmot a member of the board of management gave  an address. Various utility and novelty stalls were set up under the trees

When we moved to Greystanes the gardens weren't too good

Infested with weeds and poorly chosen plantings

But I could see that in the 1930's it would have been a magnificent spot for a garden party with the huge old trees and garden pond..

So I've been putting a lot of thought into getting this garden back into shape..

Rather than be overwhelmed by the size of the task though, we have decided to break it down into smaller sections..

 First step is this section shown in the photo above, the path to the front door and the large path down the side of the house..

The gate shown is one that I sold earlier, however I have another gate that is going in this exact spot, to close off the front turning circle from the house area..

So today in came the Bobcat..

 

and started to define the landscape..

 

Next step is to weed mat the soil area and get rid of that onion weed once and for all..

I'm pretty happy with the progress so far..

Looking forward to starting the planting..

I'm seeing big swathes of Winter Rose...

but weed matting first..

and then the gate, cant wait to see that up..

next on the list is this section which is covered in Onion weed currently..
